Doulton - the family proprietors

John Doulton Snr and his wife Jane Duneau had eight children, the eldest, John Doulton II, was born in 1819 and the second son, Henry Doulton, in 1820.

Henry Doulton married Sarah Kennerby in 1849 and their three children were Sarah Lillian Doulton (born 1852), Henry Lewis Doulton (born 1853), and Katherine Duneau Doulton (born 1857). Henry Lewis Doulton had no children, however his sister Sarah married a John Kinnersley Hooper and their son, Lewis John Eric Hooper was play a major role in the later management of Doulton & Co. Ltd.

Henry Lewis Doulton’s cousin, Ronald Duneau Doulton (the third son of Henry Doulton’s elder brother John II) also played a role in the management of the company and was a Director from the date of incorporation of the business in 1899.

Henry Lewis Doulton assumed the positions of Managing Director and first Chairman of Doulton & Co. Ltd on the company’s incorporation in 1899, only ceding the position of Managing Director to his nephew Lewis John Eric Hooper in 1919, and that of Chairman (also to Hooper) on his retirement in 1925. Hooper remained Chairman for 30 years, retiring in 1955.

Orrok Sherwood Doulton (family relationship unclear) joined the Board of Doulton & Co. Ltd in 1935 and was appointed Chairman of the company on the retirement of Lewis Hooper in 1955. His sons, Mark and Michael Duke Doulton also worked in the business. Although the Doulton business was restructured from 1st January 1956, Doulton & Co. Ltd continued as a private, family-controlled holding company up to the merger with Allied English Potteries in November 1971.
